The Joy of the Rewrite

In order to get back into my work-in-progress, I’ve been revising and rewriting all of the chapters that came before. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to revamp that much, and for most chapters I haven’t done much more than copyedit. br /br /As a writer, I’m sort of a perfectionist. It’s a habit from working at newspapers where the editing of my copy was pretty light and so, if the piece was going to be good, it had to be right the first time.br /br /But last week, I found a chapter that I had backed into. I didn’t know I had backed into it at the time. The writing seemed fine, not flat but not sparkly either.br /br /However, as I read it this time, I had enough distance to see what I had done. To get myself into the scene, I had told the backstory of the moments right before where the scene began. It was backstory that could easily have been incorporated into the action. I fixed it, and I swear, I think that chapter is near sparkly now. It was so much fun to take the characters further. I never would have been able to do it the first time around.br /br /This week, I saw in action what a href=”http://www.stephenking.com/”Stephen King/a said in his book a href=”http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Stephen-King/dp/0743455967″On Writing/a, that the first time you write the story, you’re telling it to yourself. The art of the book is in part in the rewrite.

The Theme Song

Remember that a href=”http://allymcbeal.tktv.net/Episodes1/synop/17.html”episode of Ally McBeal/a where her therapist, played by Tracy Ullman, tells her she needs to get a theme song? I always thought the choice Ally made — a href=”http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/thebigchill/tellhim.htm””Tell Him” by The Exciters/a — told the audience a lot about her personality and where she was in her life.br /br /It’s made me think about what the Theme Song for the main character in my work-in-progress (wip) would be. The Dr. Tracy Clark method of choosing a Life Theme Song insists that the song must be something that gives you a bounce in your step as your crossing the street. That leaves out a lot of songs, especially for my wip girl. br /br /My personal song, the one I hear in my head when I need a pick me up, is vintage Rolling Stones: a href=”http://www.lyricsdomain.com/18/rolling_stones/you_cant_always_get_what_you_want.html””You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”/a Okay, you caught me. Scrivenings

I’ve spent the last few days learning a new word: “scrivenings.” It’s a noun, derived from the word “scrivener” (which means “a scribe”), that loosely translates to “writing” or “scribbling.”br /br /And where, you might ask, did I pick up such a word? From a href=”http://www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener.html”Scrivener/a, the awesome software created by the people at a href=”http://www.literatureandlatte.com”Literature and Latte/a to help writers with their projects. My favorite feature, besides its awesome $34.99 price tag, is that you can bring up research, including photos, as you write without having to toggle between programs (like iphoto, adobe acrobat, etc).br /br /It’s not just a cool new toy (though it is cool and new to me). It’s also a wonderful tool for fading away distractions while I write. An Old Attitude

There’s a common sentiment I’ve heard time and time again regarding writers and writing, the gist of which is this — popular fiction is a lesser being to the exalted literary fiction, therefore less worthy of praise or attention.br /br /I somehow had thought that this was modern, something that came with the rise of literature programs. After all, Charles Dickens was a popular writer, as was Victor Hugo. Imagine my surprise when I found the following words in Jane Austen’s span style=”font-style:italic;”Northanger Abbey/span, published in the early 1800s.br /br /span style=”font-style:italic;”I will not adopt that ungenerous and impolitic custom so common with novel-writers, of degrading by their contemptuous censure the very performances, to the number of which they are themselves adding — joining with their greatest enemies in bestowing the harshest epithets on such works, and scarcely ever permitting them to be read by their own heroine, who, if she accidentally take up a novel, is sure to turn over its insipid pages with disgust. Alas! If the heroine of one novel be not patronized by the heroine of another, from whom can she expect protection and regard? I cannot approve of it.br /br /Let us leave it to the reviewers to abuse such effusions of fancy at their leisure, and over every new novel to talk in threadbare strains of the trash with which the press now groans. Let us not desert one another; we are an injured body. The intention of manufacture to produce tadalafil cheap is Ajanta Pharma after the omission of patent act. Although our productions have afforded more extensive and unaffected pleasure than those of any other literary corporation in the world, no species of composition has been so much decried. From pride, ignorance, or fashion, our foes are almost as many as our readers. br /br /And while the abilities of the nine-hundredth abridger of the History of England, or of the man who collects and publishes in a volume some dozen lines of Milton, Pope, and Prior, with a paper from the Spectator, and a chapter from Sterne, are eulogized by a thousand pens — there seems almost a general wish of decrying the capacity and undervaluing the labour of the novelist, and of slighting the performances which have only genius, wit, and taste to recommend them. /spanbr /br /Go Jane! It’s been 204 years since Austen wrote those words. It’s high time we, as writers, stop putting ourselves and our colleagues down.

The Power of Words

I’ve been dealing with the power of words. The particular words I’m thinking of were moldering in a dusty, silverfish-ridden garage until I started to look through and clear up my mother’s papers.br /br /There were letters to and from my mother, documents of her life, my old report cards and those of my siblings, the odds and ends of a history. br /br /For those of you who may feel concerned, let me put your mind at ease. My mother is very much alive. She’s just transitioned into a nursing facility, where she is having fun playing balloon volleyball and has already received one marriage proposal, to her great delight. (As the man was clearly in no mind frame to actually marry, my mother politely declined).br /br /The words in the garage were illuminating and heartbreaking. They recorded periods of my life I’d put behind me and periods of my mother’s life I never experienced. Thus, to reduce the count of such men, there are effective medications in levitra overnight the market that will provide you complete satisfaction during your intimate moments. We choose them with caution, struggling to find the right ones.br /br /Words have power. As a writer, it’s good to remember that.

Four Letter Words to Write By

Risk. Goal. Push. Dare. Luck. br /br /While we may say other ones along the way, those are the four letter words writers need to use when pursuing the holy grail of publishing. So said a href=”http://www.brucehale.com”Bruce Hale/a in his opening speech at the a href=”http://www.scbwi.org/”SCBWI /aSouth Florida Conference, which I attended this weekend.br /br /Hale, the author of the a href=”http://www.brucehale.com/chetbks.htm”Chet Gecko/a mysteries, shared tales of his writing journey: from the weirdest week of his life to his nine years of rejection letters before landing a three-book contract.br /br /It was the kind of speech that makes you want to leave, find a quiet corner and immediately start working on your WIP.
